Many international investors and corporations tend to view these regions as cost prohibitive and high risk due to language, cultural, business and legal rules or accounting differences. Thus, yield-seeking or efficiency/diversification-seeking investors on the one hand and resource-seeking or new market-seeking firms on the other hand tend to make their investment and operational decisions based on familiarity and perceived lower risk in more established markets (North & Southern Africa). International firms for example tend to enter these markets through appointment of local agents, or channel companies given exclusive single-man-in-territories rights as a way to cultivate markets, rather than seeking to extend their tried and tested domestic business model to these markets. Private equity Investors tend to focus on established regional leaders with a more crowded investment fields rather than small emerging localities (i.e. investment in an oil field in Nigeria rather than in a similar opportunities in a nascent oil giant like Ghana).
